The government became more involved with the economic system after countless Americans lost their jobs. The outbreak of unemployment influenced the government to create a variety of relief programs. These included unemployment compensation, insured bank deposits, and payment to farmers who lessened their production in an effort to raise crop prices. Work providing programs such as Civilian Conservation Corps were created by the federal government to give jobless Americans jobs.
With unemployment rates slowly decreasing, the government turned its attention on Americans who worked. The Wagner act was passed to give workers the right to self-organization, to form, join, or assist labor organizations, to bargain collectively through representatives of their own choosing, and to engage in concerted activities for the purpose of collective bargaining or other mutual aid and protection. This allowed for workers to speak out against unfair labor practices and seek proper labor reform.
