Many family units were torn apart by the Great Depression. Marriages were delayed, birth rates fell, and a large amount of husbands chose to leave their families, feeling as if they were added expenses. Numerous teenagers left their homes in search of a new life and a job. During the height of the Great Depression, nearly 250,000 teenagers were crossing America by themselves. While many of them were unsuccessful at finding a new job, some of them were able to start a life of their own. Nevertheless, after doing so, the chances of seeing their family again was nearly impossible.
